ANNETTE CHRISTENSEN

Annette Christensen - Aspiring Writer
I come from a family of travellers. My grandparents immigrated independently to USA. They met and married there. My mother was born in USA but the family returned to Denmark when she was only two and a half years old. Three of her siblings immigrated to Canada while my mother and a brother remained in Denmark.

I was born in Denmark and after having completed my education I worked as an au pair in Germany and England for two years. In 1971 I immigrated to Australia with a freshly stamped licence as a Danish registered nurse.

My husband and I did not know much about Australia. We did not know where to go and had no one to guide us in this matter. We therefore opened a map over Australia, closed our eyes and pointed. The finger landed on an area very close to Sydney and so the harbour city became home for 11 years.

We lived in country Queensland for three and a half years and also had many years in Brisbane. Being a mother of four children, working and also renovating houses has made my life a very busy one.
On a trip around Australia in 1996 we came to Far North Queensland. We liked the area and decided to buy a business. After 11 years of running a caravan park we finally hung up our work-for-a-living boots.

Now is the beginning of the rest of my life. The written word has been a lifelong passion and I am thrilled to finally have the time and life experience to pursue it now.

I have done translations for descendants of Danish pioneers in the Kingaroy area (200 km north west of Brisbane). Three boxes full of writings, notes, letters and diaries are waiting to be sorted out, planned and used for fiction and non- fiction.

I have attended several writing workshops. One workshop culminated in a story published in an anthology. Writers Festivals in Adelaide and Brisbane opened a whole new world for me. As a member of the Tropical Writers Group in Cairns I find it to be a good forum for practice reading and being critiqued. I now belong to the Book Creators Circle and I am very excited to be part of an international circle of people who like to read, write and promote their work. I see Book Creators Circle as a place where novices and seasoned writers can feast on words and grow together.
