Darleen McAllan - Aspiring Writer/Book Creator
Darleen McAllan is an aspiring writer, currently working for the United Nations in Sudan. Darleen was born on the beautiful Gold Coast in 1971. She grew up with a love of the outdoors and a vivid and creative imagination. She completed 12 years of schooling, tertiary and tafe studies and continues her tertiary education till today. As an only child, her parents gave her the best gift they possibly could. They gave her a total belief and confidence in herself.
Darleen's mother Sonya, in particular, taught her the most important life lesson of all. That Darleen had the ability to do anything she wanted, anything see set her mind to. Darleen wasn't sure if her mother ever expected her to take that encouragement so literally, but at age 36 Darleen was working for the world international organisation the United Nations in Liberia, Africa. An achievement that came as no surprise to all who knew her.
Darleen's love and understanding of poetry was first acknowledged by her year seven teacher who awarded her a perfect mark, the first he had ever given, for her recitation of a poem. Then in year eight Darleen won a writing competition to see the children's author Robert Cormier. His books were read at schools all over Australia ie the Chocolate War, I am the Cheese etc. It was here listening to his inspiring stories that the first seed of becoming a writer was planted.
Darleen's life has been filled with many adventures and amazing people. Her life journey and lessons have taken her all over the world. From working on a channel nine children's show in Brisbane to dinning with the founder of the Body Shop in Colorado to being photographed with the Prime Minister of Australia in the Solomon Islands to working as a UN Peacekeeper in Liberia and Sudan. Darleen's life experiences are what she now draws on as an aspiring author.
Darleen first wrote and created a line of inspirational greeting cards in 2000. She then had several stories published in the Cairns City Life magazine. Darleen also won Letter of the month in SHE magazine . Writing about the upside of being a 30 something.
Darleen is currently working on her first book LIFE LESSONS. A series of short stories based on her personal life and the life lessons she has gained. The stories are filled with humour, heartache and inspiration. It is her hope that her Life Lessons will inspire others in their everyday lives or at least allow them to see that its not the mistakes we make but the lessons we learn that count.
