DR JUNE PERKINS

Dr June Perkins - Academic/Poet/Aspiring Novelist
Dr June Perkins was born to a Mekeo (Papua New Guinean Indigenous Mother) and Australian (English) father who raised her in the atmosphere of an intercultural family and the Baha'i Faith, a religion she still practices today. She calls herself a world citizen and wishes to pay homage to all aspects of her cultural and spiritual identity in her writing.

She began her academic career at the University of Tasmania but moved and completed her degree and Honours year at the University of Melbourne. She went on to complete a PhD at the University of Sydney on a scholarship. Her topic was the empowerment of Indigenous women through writing and was interview, field work and literature based.

Dr June Perkins has worked in a paid capacity as a university tutor, bridging course tutor for Indigenous students, community development officer, dramaturg, arts worker, and writing workshops and projects facilitator. Since completing her Phd in 2004, and moving 'North', Dr Perkins has become an enthusiastic and prolific blogger, actively participating in the soul food network and building networks with international bloggers, as well as an aspiring songwriter.
Dr Perkins has been part of several community driven projects (most with writing at their heart) in storytelling, radio, youth drama, poetry /photography wall and readings, youth mentoring and maintained an interest in this all throughout and after academic studies. Her blogs are eclectic- covering education, identity, parenting, poetry, memoir, antiracism, meditation, life story, writing, 'women's issues', peace, as well as paying homage to Lemuria, the world created by Heather Blakey. She has published essays, photographs, interviews, poems, oral histories, and short stories in Academic journals, (Australasian Drama Studies, Aboriginal History), Anthologies (Sidewalk, Etchings, Talking Ink From Ochre) University anthologies (Preludes, New England Review), a contemporary anthology of Pacific Writers, Local and International Baha'i publications (in the United States, Netherlands and the Pacific) newspapers (Tully Times, Hinterland Press, Examiner) and on radio and the web (Global teachernetwork, Heyday online, Bob Blogspot, Pythian games) as well as on community radio. She was an Australian Interplay delegate in 1994. She is now working on more substantial works of full length books.
Her interest genres include fantasy (both for adults and children), children's literature, juvenile fiction, biography, Australiana, Baha'i historical fiction, poetry/photography books and poetry for kids specifically, and memoir. Dr June Perkins is currently working full time on her writing and as the voluntary coordinator of the Licuala Writers group - servicing Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell and is proud to be editing their very first group anthology. She has participated in writing groups in almost every city she has lived in and has voluntarily photo documented many projects and events since taking up photography in 2006.

Dr Perkins wants to write full time by publishing enough work to support her lifelong dream to be a full time writer earning enough to keep on writing and photographing.
Pioneering was Paulien Bat's - Dutch artist, response to one of Dr June Perkin's poems.
Paulien Bat often illustrates and does joint ventures such the posters specifically designed for Dr June Perkins.
