ROBERT D WARD

Robert D Ward - Aspiring Writer
I have a particular sense of humour coloured by a vivid imagination. I have been writing horror, science fiction and fantasy for ten years as a hobby. Recently, I received a diploma at the Writing School and two Statements of Completion from correspondence TAFE courses on Short Story Writing, level I and II. Fortunately, I have never received a mark below 92% and never anything higher than 100%. I intend completing the TAFE Science Fiction Writing course in 2009 and the Novel Writing course later in the same year. Now that I am actually good at writing or at least I reckon so, I am getting more serious and sending short stories out to magazines.

Humour is the main ingredient in all my work. I laugh my hardest while I write. However everything I write is dark, it is black as an underground cavern. Luckily, the responses I receive from my readers are all of amusement, so it is not so gritty that the humour is lost.

My work reflects the darkness that has been my life, and how from a certain perspective, my life can be laughed at blackly. I am not going to go on about my six year long schizophrenic experience (which is still the main disability in my life today), because other writers have already done so with their own tales. I shall mention however, that I have written an autobiography that is currently far beyond first draft. It is aimed at an audience between sixteen and thirty years of age and anybody else that it may help or educate. It is just a matter of deciding whether or not such personal tales should be put in book shops. It is a decision between helping people and keeping my horrors to my self. There are probably enough books out there on the topic already that are saturating the market. I am keen to hear your opinions on this.

In retrospect, my fiction work says enough about my experiences in an indirect way. Perhaps this is sufficient. You do not have to read non-fiction to learn things. Fictional stories are full of lessons too.

Currently I am working on the first draft of a horror-fantasy with elements of science fiction all wrapped into one. It is to be a long epic. I expect to have first draft finished by mid to late 2009, but then of course come the twenty or so re-writes which will take more time. In writing, patience is essential, and I have much of it.

Its market is definitely an adult audience. I am not good at addressing family-oriented subjects, thus why my work is so dark.

If black humour and vast concepts is your thing, this book is definitely for you. It continues to grow in scope and progressively becomes more difficult to write. There is just so much going on in it; literally layers and layers of interconnected concepts that all come together into a complete tapestry, but I still have not mapped out every thread yet. More of it comes into realization every day. I am finding it a completely involving process.

So if you have a sense of humour verging on the sinister, and enjoy thought-provoking and fantastic ideas in an expansive presentation, check out my book in the next couple of years. It will be called "Distinius."
