Dr Rossana del Zio - Italian academic and writer
Dr Rosanna del Zio is an Italian writer born in Bari and who now lives in Artena a small town near Rome. Her passion for writing takes her to New York where she speaks on the topic of "Either Brigands or Emigrants". Rossana's research allows her to connect with the immigrants who left Italy to migrate to America. She speaks of the marginalisation, the anger, and trials of those forced to leave their country. The question raises awareness of the depth of attitudinal influence of the time: were they truly brigands or migrants?
This questions is as relevant today as it was yesteryear.
Rossana's work raises her audiences' and readers' awareness to the plight of migration and its hardships. She is a talented presenter and member of the American Association of Italian Studies. On May 7-9 2009 she presented her last work "Either Brigands or Emigrants" to the Annual Conference held in NewYork City. Her visual presentations are informative, captivating and immensely "real".
Rossana's work is an ongoing discussion for the citizens of most countries where migration occurs and where there has been a long history in opening its doors to others. Nata ad Andria Bari il 26.02.1967 appassionata di Storia del Risorgimento, da qualche anno si occupa di analizzare le influenze storico-politiche e sociali che hanno caratterizzato fenomeni nazionali, come il Brigantaggio, con l'obiettivo di capirne la loro modernizzazione e darne una chiave di lettura ed una risoluzione nuova. Ripropone così, attraverso questo studio, l'attualità dell'emarginazione, della rabbia, che portano con se il divenire "emigranti per forza di cose", di realtà imposta da eventi storici. Proprio da Artena, storicamente conosciuto come il paese dei Briganti che attualmente conta un numero elevato di immigrati, che rappresenta una significativa parte degli abitanti il Centro Storico, realtà comune a molti paesi limitrofi, il progetto attua un percorso per il recupero dell'essere uomo in un habitat ostile dove amici e nemici diventano occasione per una possibilità dell'esistere.
Tali interessi nascono da una tradizione di famiglia di storici e scrittori vissuti durante il periodo del Risorgimento che hanno dato un contributo nella vita politica nazionale e culturale.
Collabora attualmente con il mensile "L'altrArtena" di Artena per la quale ha ideato e ne cura la rubrica "L'Ombelico": un viaggio nella storia del paese attraverso i racconti dei suoi abitanti di vecchie e nuove generazioni dando ogni volta uno spaccato di vita quotidiana e dei grandi eventi che hanno caratterizzato il luogo.
"Il Burattinaio della Luna", sceneggiatura scritta per il teatro nel 2006 e messa in scena nel 2007 ad Artena nell'ambito della manifestazione Palio delle Contrade, racconta uno spaccato di vita di un gruppo di briganti che, proprio ad Artena, trova rifugio, promuove in chiave più ampia con uno spettacolo teatrale o come reading letterario.
Presentato per la prima volta nel luglio 2006 durante l'edizione del "Piccolo Festival delle Arti", ad Artena, poi nel novembre 2006 all'Istituto di Cultura Italiana a New York come testimonianza del Brigantaggio come inizio del fenomeno dell'immigrazione negli U.S.A.
Nel maggio 2007 presentato nel corso della Manifestazione "Teatri di Vetro" di Roma come localizzazione del quartiere di una metropoli che diventa un piccolo paese in cui nascondersi.
L'autrice lo scorso gennaio ha pubblicato una parte dello studio sul libro edito dall'Altrartena Il Paese Maledetto Ovvero Un Paese Di Delinquenti Nati? con il capitolo: "BRIGANTAGGIO, UN VIAGGIO ATTRAVERSO IL PRESENTE" in cui, partendo da un'esperienza personale, fa un viaggio proprio nel presente per dare una interpretazione della storia anche attuale, che va letta e interpretata tra le righe, non memorizzando l'evento o la data che lo fanno riconoscere. Insieme a questo studio una presentazione video con foto e paragoni della situazione dell'immigrazione clandestina di oggi.
Membro dell'American Association of Italian Studies ha presentato il suo ultimo lavoro "Either Brigands or Emigrants" alla Conferenza annuale tenutasi a New York dal 7 al 9 maggio 2009. |

GENTE DI PASSAGGIO
In my life I have three great passions: writing, cooking and Brigands.
One night my paternal grandfather, took my hand and entreated a desire in me to learn about the history of my family, and the history of bandits who they had met and who had left an indelible mark. That mark would stay with me for my first forty years. That was the first time the stories became real. They were not legends nor lies.
They happened just as my grandfather had told me.
While cooking, over several hours he would tell me these stories, and he would show me the treasures that were left in our old house. He told me about many things that would be mine forever. These stories struck me more than anything else.
Until I fought with the modern brigands, the teachings of my grandfather were for me like a weapon in my hands, a shield in my heart, the strength in my head that nagged at me to be revealed in a book. This book, Gente di Passaggio, is the story of the people, the brigands, who came through our lives and left an indelible mark on our family.
