Dr Carole Ford - Social Justice Advocate/ Deakin University Academic in Women's Studies After an extensive career as an early childhood teacher, I completed a PhD in Women's Studies at Deakin University. This provided an opportunity for me to lecture in women's studies and supervise post-graduate students. It also resulted in a memorable role in 'The Vagina Monologues'. Seeking a warmer climate I relocated to Cairns from the Mornington Peninsula with my husband and three adult children almost four years ago, and was subsequently appointed to the role of Equity and Disability Officer at Tropical North Queensland TAFE for three years.
Currently I am an activist and advisor for women; secretary of the Peninsula Branch of the Association of Women Educators; convenor of Cairns Women's Network; an active member of Amnesty International and EMILY's List; an office-bearer for both state and federal committees of a political party; a Pyjama Angel; a student enrolled in a ME(Hons) research course at JCU; casual lecturer/tutor at JCU; 'Nanna Carole' to Grade 1 children at a local public school; and a trainee pilot.
I fervently believe that '. . . silence is the language of complicity . . . speaking out is the language of change', and I use my 'voice' loudly to promote social, political and economic change for women and girls.
My recently published book, Still Invisible: The myth of the woman-friendly state is a critical, but very readable, analysis of a range of government policies over the past three decades and details the potential for the advancement of social justice and women's rights.
